Coaches understand that their coachees are all unique in their own way and have different strengths and styles. The value that they bring to coaching is to facilitate their coachees in discovering their personal strengths and styles.
One example is in the area of learning styles. Now, the coach isn't a teacher who's going to teach the student how to solve equations. Neither is s/he a parent who's going to advise the student to study harder. But the coach can certainly work with the student to discover what learning style(s) work best for him/her, and put it to practice!
A well-known model of learning styles is VARK. Developed in 1987 by Neil Fleming, it helps to identify learning styles and explains how learners with different learning styles process and retain information differently.
Using colour-coded notes
Analysing charts and diagrams
Recognising patterns
Reading out loud
Listening to recordings or watching videos
Using mnemonics or songs
Highlighting details
Creating lists and notes
Reading books or articles
Taking part in hands-on activities
Conducting experiments
Working with 3D models or objects
Students may not have just one learning style, but a combination of 2 or more! A student who isn't doing well academically may simply not be applying the learning style(s) that work best for him/her.
