Discover your personal learning style!
As coaches, we understand that all youth are unique in their own way and have different strengths and styles. What we do is to facilitate them to discover this.
One example is in the area of learning styles. Coaches aren't teachers who are going to teach youths how to solve Maths equations. Neither are they parents who are going to advise youths to study harder. But coaches can certainly work with youths to discover what learning style(s) work best for them, and put it to practice!
A well-known model of learning styles is VARK. Developed in 1987 by Neil Fleming, it identifies learning styles and explains how learners with different learning styles process and retain information differently.
Using colour-coded notes
Analysing charts and diagrams
Recognising patterns
Reading out loud
Listening to recordings or watching videos
Using mnemonics or songs
Highlighting details
Creating lists and notes
Reading books or articles
Taking part in hands-on activities
Conducting experiments
Working with 3D models or objects
Youth may not have just one learning style, but a combination of 2 or more! A youth who isn't doing well academically may simply not be applying the learning style(s) that work best for him/her.
